Alternate Ads

Statements: 2. - In almost all ads, you see people having so much fun when using a specific product. The people using them are young, sexy, happy, etc. just because they are using a simple product. Ads imply that if you use that product, you too will be one of the people in their ads, which is what most people want.

4. - Ads make it seem you have to use the trends that are considered "in" to fit in and be accepted. They make it seem that it's only what's on the outside that counts and not what's on the inside. Some people aren't accepted by others because of what they're wearing or not wearing.

Ads Everywhere

Advertising: It's Everywhere - This article talks about how there are ads everywhere we look. Sadly, that is becoming more and more true everyday. No matter where we look, there is a good chance you'll see an advertisment. I think the article is right in the sense that there are ads being placed in almost every public place from the sides of a bus to washroom stalls. Lots of everyday citizens don't stop to think about all the ad placements. Most parents try to protect their kids from the harmful ads such as smoking, drinking, etc.

How Marketers Target Kids - This article discusses how children are a target for marketing. Kids are relyed on to pester their parents to buy them something. Some parents will give in so they can provide their kids with the best and plays on guilt from possibly not spending enough time with their kids. I agree with the article on how marketers target young kids. Children and other people may not even realize who is being targeted with most ads. Some parents are too blind to the fact that their kids are being targeted to pester their parents for items.

Special Issues for Tweens and Teens - The article talks about how teens and tweens are targeted negatively. When marketers treat tweens like teens, parents are removed from the picture and tweens are left vulnerable to the negative ads about self image, body image, sexuality, violence, etc. In the present, lots of tweens and teens, both boys and girls, are unhappy with the way their body is. To me, this is the sad truth of the present. Lots of young boys and girls feel pressured to fit in and look a certain way. Problems like those can lead to anorexia, bulimia, being rebels against parents, etc. Lots of ads marketers feature impossibly thin people and imply that that is what everyone should look like. Parents try to save their kids from these sorts of negative ads before it's too late.

Marketing to individuals

Some ads appealing to teens - http://gigaom.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/seventeen.jpg
http://thewoozylife.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/osiris_girls_ads_1.jpg

These aren't the kind of ads that appeal to most parents. Parents, unlike teens, usually don't care about what is "in" or "cool". Most teens feel pressured and obligated to wear or do what other people do to fit in. Lots of ads directed at teens are of "cool" groups of kids advertising a certain thing, a brand name, activity, show, etc. The ads imply that if you use the advertised product, you too will be "cool". Ads to teenage boys and girls are different. They advertise different things and sometimes use different strategies. Girls and guys have different obligations. Most girls feel pressured to look a certain way and most guys feel they have to act a certain way around their friends to fit in. In a way though, the ads aren't so different in the sense that they advertise ways to fit in.

Fairy Tale

Once upon a time there was a broke man and his chick and they had 2 kids. The step-mom was very rude to the kids and was annoying to the husband. They were starving and had no food. The rude step-mom pressured the husband to abandon the kids in the woods. The son had overheard and told his sister what the mom had said. He made her feel better by assuring her they'd make it back and he put bread crumbs in his pocket. When the dad took the kids for a walk, the boy was dropping the bread crumbs and leaving a trail. When the dad had abandoned his kids, they began to look for the crumbs. To their surprise and horror the bread crumbs were gone. "I'm scared!" cried the girl. Her brother tried to assure her that he was there to look after her and protect her. When the morning came, they began to wander around aimlessly, searching for a path. They thought they were very lost, until they saw a weird little crib. When they walked up to the crib the boy broke off a piece of the wall and discovered it was not a normal wall. "This is chocolate!" he exclaimed. His sister broke a piece of the house off and shouted "This is icing!" The 2 of them began to pig out and shove their faces with house. "Well well well don't you 2 have a sweet tooth?" said an old woman wobbling out of the house with a creeper look on her face. "Come in, don't be shy." she went on creepily. However, the old lady was actually a witch and her house was a trap. They had stumbled upon a trap. When she had trapped them in the house, she threw the boy into a cage. "You're too scrawny, I'll make you into a fatty and eat you!" she laughed. "You can clean, then I'll eat you too!" she told the girl. The boy however had a high metabolism and didn't get any fatter. "You're still too skinny! When will you get fat?" she said in frusturastion. However, she was too antsy and didn't care. "Light the oven!" she yelled at the girl. A little while later the witch was once again screaming at the girl. "Check if the oven is hot enough!" she yelled, but the witch didn't know that the girl wasn't as stupid as she looked. "I don't know if it's hot enough." she told the witch. The witch sighed in frusturation and shoved the girl out of the way. When the witch bent over to check, the girl pushed her in all the way and slammed the door. In minutes the witch was burnt to ashes. The girl ran over to the cage and set her brother free. More happy than pigs in mud, they took all the candy they possibly could and filled several baskets with as much as they would hold and set off to find a new home. While wandering around, they found their father. When he saw his kids, he beamed with excitement and rushed to them. "Your step-mom is dead! We're free!" he cried out in joy. The 3 of them cheered in happiness and lived happily ever after in the sugar crib.

Tom Brokaw explaining Canada

From this video people who don't already know learn that Canada is a loyal and caring country. Canada is a very helpful country and is always there for another country to lean on. Canada is a country you want on your side in a fight, it is very reliable. It is a country for immigrants from all over the world to come to. Canada and the U.S. have a very big trading relationship with each other.

The video pretty much sums up what Canada is like and how Canadians are. The stuff in this video is the type of stuff I would put in my own video like this. I would add the kinds of benefits that Canada has.

Canada and the U.S.

Similarities - Countries for immigrants to come to, stock trades, brave fighters, freedom

Differences - Canada is big for producing oil, the U.S. is a big place for Canadian tourists, health care, education
